The Destructors
The 1954 Graham Greene short story Ms Pomeroy teaches, in which boys demolish a house and flood it. Donnie floods the school days later; Pomeroy is fired for teaching it.
"Destruction is a form of creation," Donnie tells the class, quoting the story. The parallel with his own acts as Living Receiver - the flooded school, the burned house - is the film's first hint that the vandalism is meaningful. Kitty Farmer's crusade against the story is what gets Pomeroy dismissed.
