Donnie's English teacher, who assigns Graham Greene's "The Destructors", seats Gretchen next to Donnie, and is fired for it. She gives him the phrase 'cellar door'.
Pomeroy connects three threads: the story about flooding a house that precedes Donnie flooding the school; the seating decision that introduces Gretchen; and, on her way out of the school, the words "cellar door" that Donnie will find carved at Roberta Sparrow's house on the final night. Her parting sentence - "Sometimes I'm afraid of what you might tell me" - is one of the film's quiet acknowledgements that the adults sense the Receiver.
